My friend Jason runs a photoblog, Digital Nap and has recently relaunched the site. He takes great photos of the tri-state area and is happier when his site's design is less than a few months old.

Great look Jay, although you should have waited for CSS Reboot 2005!

Weekend in Vermont

February 16, 2005

20050216.asia_snow.jpg

Asia and I just got back from a great long weekend in Stratton, Vermont with some amazing conditions for snowboarding. It was bright and sunny and the snow was soft, perfect for riding. One the way home we drove through New Hampshire to visit Uncle Bill, Aunt Audrey and William. William is so cute that it's insane. More photos will be posted soon.

Take A Friday Off

October 23, 2003

An intersting article was sent to me by Andrew. I've been watching this trend for a while now and have seen it very clearly in my own life. There is a constant struggle between the happiness that comes with success and the struggle to obtain/maintain that happiness. What really constitutes that happiness is a very individual thing. Originally I believed it to be making a good salary and taking the standard 3 weeks of vacation a year. In my current situation I'm lucky if I get a weekend off. Sure I can change my work habits and concentrate more on my social/family life but that would require major lifestyle changes that are not easy.

The original article, which is mentioned in the one Andrew sent me is from the Tuesday, October 21st, 2003 issue of Newsday.

Organization

October 13, 2003

This week holds to be busy. I am organizing all of which I work with digitally. I set up this site. I'm putting up photos soon. I've said that thousands of times but I think I'm finally getting to it now.

I'm organizing my work. Lastupdated.net is a project.

Fitting Lyrics

December 17, 2002

I'm listening to Paul's Boutique right now and just heard "a long distance from my girl and I'm talking on the cellular". That's been the story of my life for the past few months. The rest of the song does not apply. For example, I'm never "doing 120, plowing over mailboxes."

Feelings

December 16, 2002

Today I'm a little sad. I could really use a hug. That sounds corny but it's the truth. I saw my family this weekend and felt very close to them. My life is amazing and is about to change in so many ways. I am very confident about what I'm doing. I wish I could go into it all right now but I'm not going to. I want this week to be over and my headache to go away. Friday I am going to Switzerland to be with Asia. We will spend Christmas together.

I've been pretty vague in speaking about Asia. To everyone who may read this blog she is a friend of mine. In reality she is much more than that, more than I could ever explain. She is a part of me and a part of my life. On January 9th we will be living together on Thompson Street, starting our new life together.

There's a lot more but too much to post. And the details are personal...so if you're interested, contact me. If you're just reading this in passing...know that amazing people exist in this world and sometimes they enter your life. When they do, don't miss it.

Update

November 13, 2002

I've left this website alone for some time now. It's hard to write everyday. Over and over again I've said that I will update it more frequently. I'm not saying that today. I will, on the other hand, start posting more about the things I'm currently thinking about or involved in.

For example, in 2 weeks Kelvin, Anna and I are going to Poland. We're flying into Warsaw on LOT airlines and quickly making our way down to Krakow, one of my favorite cities in the world. Then on Friday taking a train up to Gdansk. When in Gdansk we'll be staying at Asia's house and hopefully have a pretty rockin party on Friday night.

On the horizon after that trip is a snowboarding adventure to Chamonix where Asia and I will spend a week riding some of the best mountains in all of Europe.

Also, I've posted some pictures from Paris in October at:
http://www.lastupdated.net/paris35mm/.
Enjoy.

OK, that's it for now.

A Long, Long Time

September 17, 2002

Well it's been a long time since I've had a chance to update this but I can say that so much has happened in my life that I don't think I have enough space on this server to write about it. I had an amazing trip to Europe visiting some very amazing, very special places. It all started in Berlin with an amazing weekend spent taking photographs and partying. We then made our way to Poland, we being Asia and me along with Peter driving. I wrote about that drive in a previous entry. We spent a couple days in the North of Poland in Asias city, Gdansk. It's a beautiful city full of life and character with old buildings and huge churches. Next we took a train to Warsaw. I wasn't overly thrilled with Warsaw as it's not a very pretty city. We spent the night with some friends of Asia's and the next morning took care of some stuff in the city center. After a tough morning we caught a train to Krakow. This was the most amazing day of my entire life. We arrived in Krakow the same day as the Pope. He was there to address the people and since Krakow is his home town the people of Poland turn out in huge numbers to see him. We had an amazing time in Krakow spending most of the night at a beautiful restaurant called Pod Aniolami (Under the Angles) chatting and laughing. We then headed to a great little club and hung out before grabbing a cup of coffee and heading to bed.

The next day we spent walking around Krakow checking out all of the old buildings and the Wawel castle. There was, at one time a real dragon in the city. You may think I'm kidding but I'm not. It's a great story and I'll write about it one day.

After Krakow we headed to Zakopane, a small mountian town in the far South. What an amazing place. My favorite memory of Zakopane is the food. The best food I've ever eaten in my life. We ate everything from trout to steak to potato pancakes to ice cream...and everything in between. The beer was tall and tasty and the tea with spirits made the chilly evenings warm.

After Zakopane we headed back to Krakow to spend another night before catching a loooooonnnnngggg train back up to Gdansk.

Once we got back to Gdansk on Monday night we had a chance to relax and enjoy the city for a few more days. We spent a lot of time hanging out at Asia's house and even had a small dinner party one night.

Wednesday night we hopped in the car with Peter and his brother Paul and started out on a 15 hour drive across Germany to Amsterdam. What an amazing drive! At one point in Germany I looked up from the back seat to see Asia driving at 180 kph. That's pretty damn fast.

Once in Amsterdam we checked into our hotel and then headed out to check out the much talked about city. At first glance Amsterdam is a beautiful city with amazing old buildings and an extensive network of canals. The canals are really cool and much more efficient than roads, given you have a boat. We rented bicycles and rode all over the city stopping at Rijksmuseum to take in some Rembrandt.

That Saturday I hopped on a plane and headed back to NYC.

I've left a lot of details out of this story. There is really just too much to write. Some folks I've told this story to and even they couldn't absorb all of the details. There are many details that we'll probably never tell anyone. Little parts of the trip that really made it something amazing. People we met, places we visited, thoughts we shared. I really can't put into words all of the emotions I've felt on this trip and the past few weeks I've been home.

In the end it's a beautiful story...one I'm sure I'll write all of one day.

On My Mind

There's something sitting in my head right now. It's a little to the left of my logic lobe, leaning against my creativity quadrant and weighing heavily on my motivation membrane. I'm not quite sure as to what it is but it's making it very difficult to concentrate. It's a sort of uncertainty...not knowing what's in store. It happens to me every now and then...a sort of anxious feeling that is both exciting and terifying at the same time. There are new things in my life that are very unfamiliar to me...situations I've been presented with of which I can find no precidence. I'm basically winging it. Wish me luck.

Blackout

I first realized something was wrong when my emails wouldn't send. Next, I tried to ping my personal website. It didn't work. I tried to go to CNN. No such luck.

I gasped, clenched my mouse tight in my right hand and slowly watched my Adium windows turn red due to the lack of a network connection. My Limewire downloads halted, my ssh connections dropped and within 15 seconds I was cut off from the outside world. We had lost our internet connection.

I quickly yelled to the guys in the other room, "You guys online?".

"What the f*%$", was the only reply I needed to hear. Looks like we're down.

For two days we had no internet connection at work. No surfing the web. No email. No instant messenger. What does a web shop do when they cann't get on the web? Draft a bunch of emails, they sit in the outbox. Work on some code locally. Redesign my own site. That's about it. The biggest question we asked ourselves was, "What did people do before the internet?". This seems like a strange question considering there are millions of people who still have yet to "see" the internet but to kids like us the internet is a lifeline.

I met up with Utah last night and we were talking about this whole internet outage episode which happened last week and he reminded me of the New York City Blackouts of 1965.

Yesterday I watched my younger brother go from being an 8th grader to a high school freshman. I sat in the bleachers at the Old Bridge High School East Campus with my parents and two sisters in the rainforest like humid conditions to watch the ceremony. I remember when I was moving on to high school. What a great time. School is an amazing place. Congratulations Brian and good luck in high school.

Prom

June 07, 2002

So my little younger sister Kristen is going to the prom tonight. I'm going home with Allison, my other younger sister, so I can take some photos. My parents are a little lax when it comes to photography. They take a lot of pictures, but never get them developed. At their house there is a bag filled with hundreds of rolls of film which all need to be developed and printed. I'm thinking of taking the bag and getting contact sheets printed...at least they can see what's on them.

After the prom photos I'll prob. be back in the city...hopefully watching the Nets beat the Lakers tonight at 9. Since Gary is lazy I'll probably head out to JC and watch the game at his place. It's probably better though, because at my place I'd end up on the computer rather than paying attention to the game and these are the Nets, my home state team (sort of). Well regardless, they're from the northeast...and that's much better than LA, not that I've been there.

Morning Running

June 03, 2002

So I was talked into registering for the New York City Marathon. I used to run in high school and a little in college but nowhere near the 26.6 mile mark I'm looking at in November. At first I was a little worried that I wouldn't be able to do it but now, now I'm convinced I won't be able to do it! That's not true, I'm sure I'll be fine by November. I started running again yesterday morning. A simple route, down West Houston to the West Side Highway, down the WSH making a left on Spring Street, up Spring making a left on Thompson and up to my door. I'm not sure of the exact distance but I'm able to do it in under 10 minutes. It's a good start I think although again, it's nowhere near the distance I'm going to need to be able to run. The best part of it is getting up and out first thing in the morning. For the past few weeks I've had a lot of trouble motivating every day. This appears to be helping.

Also, check out NYC bloggers. (via Glenda) They're keeping tabs on all of the blogs in NYC based on subway stop. What a great idea. And the winner of most blogs per subway stop, Astor Place. (thanks Justin)

Rain On The Roof

June 01, 2002

Two nights in a row I've been on a rooftop in this city. Two nights in a row I've gotten rained on. Two great nights. And this one has yet to begin. Today was beautiful. Bright blue sky, yellow sun. The air was warm.

I made a list while sitting on the roof tonight. A list of things I want to do and ways to get them done. A list of places to go and directions to take. I want to start checking things off.

Moving and leaving

Saw an amazing view of the city tonight during a thunderstorm. From a rooftop in Brooklyn we watched the clouds sweep across Manhattan. Thunder and Lightning. Then the rain followed. We got Utah's stuff inside just in time.

I said goodbye to another friend tonight who is leaving tomorrow for what sounds like an amazing trip. She must be the fourth or fifth person I've said good bye to in the last 6 months. Most leaving on some sort of worldly adventure. It's great to receive postcards from them. The stamps are great and they always have something interesting to say.

School

May 29, 2002

I've been looking at some schools over the past few days. It seems like ages since the last time I did this. I'm thinking about going back for an MFA in photography or computer art. More than going back to school I'm interested in a change in my life. I think now is a good time to take a step back and re-evaluate what's important. Take inventory of the things I've done so far and make a list of the things I want to do. It also gives me an opportunity to leave New York with the intention of coming back. I've been talking about leaving New York for a while now, but never put together a solid plan. I think to take a couple years and go to school will let me do some things (mountain bike, snowboard, kayak, explore, photograph, write, read, learn, play guitar) that I love to do but don't really have time for right now. And then there's the education aspect. Let's not forget that school is for learning and not just hanging out. I'd love to get an MFA in photography because, obviously, I love taking pictures. I would really like to work for a travel or nature company and take photographs of exotic locations (wouldn't everybody). Even if I just do it for a year or two, I think it would be a blast. There's also the option of getting a degree in computer art but part of me thinks that I should explore some analog options for a while. I've been up to my neck in digital for the past 5 or 6 years. I need a break.

Spring Lake and Monmouth Race Track

May 27, 2002

Motorcycles rock! A little dangerous but so much fun. This past weekend I got a chance to ride Vinny's Honda CBR 600. This thing is <blur>fast</blur>...in mere seconds you're hanging on for dear life as this high performance engine tries to race out from underneath you. What a rush. Kelvin also got a new car. And what a great color. A nice bright blue...not one of those sissy blues that look black at night, this thing looks like an exploding blue neon light. And what a car...this thing handles like a champ.

I also had a chance to check out Monmouth Racetrack. Horse racing is interesting...the betting, the venue, the people. There's so much money involved. Not too sure if I'm sold on the idea but it sure is a good time.

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Bad Mood

May 24, 2002

It's really beautiful outside. It's a little hazy but the air is warm and the sun feels great. There's also a welcoming breeze. I wonder why I'm in a bad mood though. Left work early, got a haircut (too short), and had a beer with Utah and still, a bad mood. My mom is coming up to have dinner and do some walking around/shopping. I'm psyched about that because I don't really get to see her too often. She's never spent a night in the city before so I think it will be exciting for her to wake up here tomorrow. Go out and get coffee before all of the tourists arive downtown. Soho is really just a madhouse on the weekends...Prada this and Gucci that. It all gets old rather quickly. It's so easy to figure out who loves this area and who bought their appreciation of the area. Is that a righteous thing to say? Am I being elitest? I guess you could argue that I am a little but at the same time I do appreciate the "high fashion" players around here. I love the Prada store, it's really well done. But...I think that stores like the Prada and Dolce and Gabana stores are more like art stores than clothing stores. Sure, DG suits are great...if you can afford it. I see too many people scraping pennies or living selflessly just to be a part of that "high fashion" culture that it even starts to degrade the product.

Wow. That was a lot. Sorry about that. Anyway, I'm going to try to snap out of this bad mood. Maybe knowing that tomorrow at around 2:00 PM Annas house will be full of all of my favorite people hanging out, laughing, enjoying each others company. I really can't wait for that. I miss my friends like that. We used to do things like that all the time. It's funny how close you can still be with people and only see them every now and then. These folks are like family to me.

Ok, that's enough for now.

Blue T-Shirt

May 10, 2002

Today I put on an old blue t-shirt. It reminds me of two summers ago. Moving to New York, enjoying the city in the late spring. Eating outside, playing in the park, going out of town for adventures in the wilderness on the weekends. The t-shirt is a light shade of blue, has a big silkscreened wave on the back and fits a little too small. It's a very cool t-shirt. I don't wear it too often but when I do I remember why I love it so much. It is just so soft and familiar.

All Wrapped Pp

May 07, 2002

Wow. This life thing is tricky. One second you think you understand it, then BLAM, the world as we know it changes. I'm sure this happens to even the smallest creatures. Fruit flies. From the second they are born (hatched?) they have about 30 minutes to live a complete and fulfilling life. That's not much time...fortunatly we have a little longer. But, from that instant...that first light...we must do whatever we can to make ourselves and those around us as happy as can be while maintianing some sort of order (we are civilized, you know). What happens when WHAM, the produce worker at the super market splats your fruit fly guts all over some ripe papaya? Hope you did everything you wanted to before that happened.

I guess I'm just a little confused over here. It's not all making complete sense right now. Some things seem so easy while others are a constant battle. This isn't your normal relationship rant or a problem with work. This is just a general observation of the world around me. While I think there are some things I really need to make happen, there are others that I think I will be happier if they just happen to me. That's not to say that I'd like someone to splat my guts all over the frozen food section, just that I need to slow down in planning some aspects of my life. There are a lot of things we can do with our time here...what's next for me?

I'd love to get some feedback on this but I haven't completed my comments popup yet and am too proud to put it up before it's done. Also, I cannot justify working on that until I have the photo galleries up. Gotta have priorities, know what I mean? If you do feel that you just have to let me know how you feel about this then do it. I'd love to hear what you think.
